In the last video we saw the different types and the potential of vertical farming, but we also saw how it is mostly limited to leafy greens. How can we improve vertical farming to grow more types of food, and how big can the impact be? We saw how the most promising type of vertical farm is the plant factory, and how it is more advanced than a hydroponic greenhouse. Not only does its use hydroponics but it also utilizes artificial grow lights and multiple growing levels. It has a much greater level of control over it’s environment, allowing it to boost yield. While Plant Factories might be the most viable version of vertical farming, is it going to be enough to impact the global issues? Agriculture is both a contributor and solution to major global issues, from climate change to world hunger. Can the plant factory help to solve these problems? What technology improvements are needed to make vertical farms profitable and sustainable? From the LED grow light, to solar energy, future tech will play a key role in reducing the cost and carbon footprint of this technology. Mānuka honey known for being is earthier, richer, and more viscous than many other honeys. It comes from the nectar of the flower of Leptospermum scoparium — also known as Manuka, which is only native to New Zealand. Mānuka, in fact, is a Maori word. “The plant itself is very rare. It’s difficult to harvest because the flower is only open for 12 days, and sometimes we have to use helicopters to collect this honey.” John Rawcliffe from the Mānuka Factor Honey Association told Business Insider. Although mānuka bushes can also be found in Australia, New Zealand accounts for almost all the world’s production, with exports worth 300 million NZ dollars ($204m) and expected to rise to 1.2 billion NZ ($800m) by 2028.
What we can learn from the humble honey bee? Well it appears a lot more than you’d expect, bees may help us get closer to understanding genetic links to obesity and diabetes and even unlock some of the mysteries of the human mind. A glimpse of my summer honey flow operating strategies from hive split straight to stripping boxes in the fall. I manage my hives in single brood boxes,and because of that I employ many strategies to manage swarming and to maximize my honey crop. I don’t focus at all on the split, even though it is a major part of this strategy, I will leave the brood nest management for its own video. During the 2018 crop year, my honey crop came in hard off the start and then ended extremely early. I typically get flows that run well into August but this year my flows ended in last week of July. Too hot and too dry. With these type of unpredictable weather conditions it is very important to capitalize on that nectar flow the moment it starts to flow. This is the reason why I put so much attention towards colony population brood nest management. Last year within roughly 4-5 weeks, we gathered 197,000 lbs off 1200 production hives. Very little came in on the nucs because they matured later in summer. But we did fill some boxes in some yards 🙂 We never know whats ahead of us so that is why I manage to grab it when its there! without capitalizing during the opportune times, we risk missing our main stream of income.
